Preterm Premature Rupture Of Membranes (PPROM) is the rupture of membranes (amniotic sac) at least one hour before the onset of labour, at <37 weeks gestation.

Risk Factors

  • Bacterial Infection
  • Smoking

Investigation & Management


  • Steroids (betamethasone) for lung maturation
  • FBC
  • CRP
  • Prophylactic ABX (erythromycin)
  • Contact neonatal unit


  • Refer to high risk antenatal clinic for weekly visits
  • Arrange USS, AFI and Doppler scans
  • Refer to antenatal day unit


  • Induce if after 34wks gestation
  • Labour usually begins spontaneously in < 48hrs
