Jaundice & Rhesus

From Mediwikis

Jaundice in neonates may be due to a number of causes:

  • Haemolytic Disease of the Newborn (HDN)
  • Intrauterine Congenital Infections (eg syphilis, CMV, parvovirus)
  • Erythrocyte membrane defects
  • Enclosed haemorrhages
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Gastrointestinal obstruction
  • Metabolic Diseases

Haemolytic Disease of the newborn can be the result of many causes, but is commonly explained in the context of Rhesus Disease, a condition where the maternal antibodies target fetal erythrocytes and cause immune haemolysis.
