Abbreviated Mental Test

A brief, ten point mental test useful for performing quickly in any patient with suspected cognitive impairment or confusion. A score of 6 or less suggests some form of cognitive impairment.[1]

  • "What is your age?"
  • "What is the time?"
  • "Please remember the address: 42 East Street"
  • "What is the year?"
  • "Where are we?"
  • "Who am I? Who is this" (point to family member, nurse)
  • "What is your Date Of Birth?"
  • "What year did World War One begin?" Or other historical event.
  • "Who is the prime minister?" or "When did you come to this country?"
  • "Count backwards from 20 to 1"
  • "What is the address I asked you to remember earlier?"
